Serve them with your favourite dipping sauce, and you have a simple, delicious recipe that even tofu beginners can enjoy.

Preparation and Cooking Time:

  • Prep Time: 15 minutes

  • Cooking Time: 15–20 minutes

  • Total Time: 30–35 minutes

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Servings: 2–3

Ingredients:

  • For the Tofu Nuggets:

    • 400g firm tofu

    • 1 tbsp soy sauce

    • 1 tsp garlic powder

    • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika

    • 1/2 tsp onion powder

    • 1/4 tsp black pepper

    • 1 tsp lemon juice

  • For the Crispy Coating:

    • 4 tbsp cornflour

    • 3 tbsp breadcrumbs or panko breadcrumbs

    • 1/2 tsp paprika

    • 1/2 tsp dried oregano

    • 1/4 tsp salt, or to taste

    • 1–2 tbsp water, as needed

    • 1–2 tbsp cooking oil or oil spray

  • For Serving:

    • Tomato ketchup

    • Garlic mayonnaise or vegan mayonnaise

    • Sweet chilli sauce

    • Fresh lemon wedges, optional

Method:

Step 1: Press the Tofu
Drain the tofu and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel or several paper towels. Place a plate or another light weight on top and leave it for 10–15 minutes to remove excess moisture. This helps the coating stick better and makes the nuggets crispier. Cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes or irregular nugget-shaped pieces.

Step 2: Season the Tofu
Place the tofu pieces in a bowl. Add the soy sauce, garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, black pepper, and lemon juice. Toss gently until the pieces are evenly coated. Let them rest for about 5 minutes so the tofu can absorb the seasoning.

Step 3: Prepare the Crispy Coating
In a shallow bowl, combine the cornflour, breadcrumbs, paprika, dried oregano, and salt. Mix thoroughly so the seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the coating.

Step 4: Coat the Nuggets
Add the seasoned tofu pieces to the coating mixture and turn them gently until each piece is covered. If the coating does not stick in some places, lightly dab those areas with a little water before coating again. Press the breadcrumbs gently onto the tofu to help create a crisp outer layer.

Step 5: Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for around 3 minutes, following the manufacturer's instructions. Lightly grease the basket or use a liner approved for your air fryer. Arrange the coated tofu pieces in a single layer, leaving space between them so hot air can circulate.

Step 6: Air Fry Until Golden
Lightly spray or brush the nuggets with oil. Air fry at 200°C for 15–20 minutes, turning the pieces halfway through cooking. Cook until the coating is golden and crisp. Cooking time can vary depending on the size of the nuggets and the air fryer model, so check them near the end.

Step 7: Serve While Crispy
Carefully remove the nuggets from the air fryer and let them rest for 1–2 minutes. Serve immediately with ketchup, garlic mayonnaise, or sweet chilli sauce. Finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice if you enjoy a little extra brightness.

Serving Suggestion:

Serve these crispy tofu nuggets with potato wedges, coleslaw, or a fresh green salad for a complete meal. They also work wonderfully as a party snack with a selection of dipping sauces.

Tip:
Use firm or extra-firm tofu rather than silken tofu, which is too delicate for this recipe. Avoid overcrowding the air fryer basket, as this can make the coating less crispy. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs and tamari instead of regular soy sauce. If reheating leftovers, air fry them briefly at 180–190°C until warmed through and crisp again.

Enjoy these crunchy, flavourful tofu nuggets for an easy homemade snack that proves plant-based food can be every bit as satisfying!
