Strawberry Matcha Latte at Home

Introduction:

Strawberry Matcha Latte is a beautiful, refreshing drink that combines the sweetness of fresh strawberries with the earthy flavour of Japanese matcha green tea and the smooth creaminess of milk. Its naturally vibrant pink and green layers make it perfect for café-style drinks at home, summer afternoons, or a special weekend treat. Made with simple ingredients and without expensive café equipment, this strawberry matcha latte is as enjoyable to look at as it is to drink.

Preparation and Cooking Time:

  • Prep Time: 10 minutes

  • Cooking Time: 5 minutes

  • Total Time: 15 minutes

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Servings: 1 large glass

Ingredients:

  • For the Strawberry Layer:

    • 100g fresh strawberries, hulled and chopped

    • 1–2 tsp sugar or honey, adjusted to taste

    • 1 tsp lemon juice (optional)

  • For the Matcha Layer:

    • 1 tsp matcha green tea powder

    • 60ml warm water, not boiling

    • 1–2 tsp honey or simple syrup, optional

  • For the Milk Layer:

    • 200ml cold milk

    • 1/2 cup ice cubes

    • 1 fresh strawberry, for garnish (optional)

Method:

Step 1: Prepare the Strawberry Purée
Place the chopped strawberries in a small bowl and mash them with a fork until they form a juicy, slightly chunky purée. Add the sugar or honey and lemon juice, if using. Mix well until the sweetener dissolves. For a smoother texture, blend the strawberries briefly. Taste and adjust the sweetness according to your preference.

Step 2: Sift the Matcha Powder
Place the matcha powder in a small bowl through a fine-mesh sieve to remove any lumps. This helps create a smooth matcha mixture and prevents dry clumps from appearing in the finished drink.

Step 3: Whisk the Matcha
Add the warm water to the matcha powder. Whisk briskly in a zigzag or small circular motion until the powder dissolves and a light layer of foam forms on the surface. Avoid boiling water, as excessively hot water can make matcha taste bitter. Stir in honey or simple syrup if you prefer a sweeter drink.

Step 4: Build the Strawberry Layer
Spoon the strawberry purée into the bottom of a tall serving glass. Spread it slightly around the base so the pink colour is visible through the glass.

Step 5: Add the Milk and Ice
Add the ice cubes over the strawberry purée. Slowly pour the cold milk into the glass. Pouring gently helps preserve the beautiful contrast between the strawberry and milk layers.

Step 6: Finish with Matcha
Slowly pour the prepared matcha over the milk. For a more defined layered appearance, pour it over the back of a spoon. The green matcha, white milk, and pink strawberry purée will create an attractive café-style drink.

Step 7: Garnish and Serve
Garnish with a fresh strawberry if desired. Serve immediately with a reusable straw or long spoon. Stir the layers together before drinking to enjoy the balanced combination of sweet strawberries, creamy milk, and earthy matcha.

Serving Suggestion:
Serve this strawberry matcha latte with buttered toast, banana bread, cookies, or a light breakfast. It also makes a refreshing afternoon drink alongside a homemade sandwich.

Tip:
For the best flavour, use ripe, sweet strawberries and good-quality matcha intended for drinking. If fresh strawberries are unavailable, thawed frozen strawberries can also work. For a dairy-free version, use oat milk or almond milk. Adjust the sweetener gradually so the strawberry flavour and matcha remain balanced.

Enjoy this refreshing, colourful strawberry matcha latte at home and bring a little café-style magic to your everyday routine!
