Vegan bacon made from rice paper offers a crispy and flavorful alternative to traditional bacon. The marinade provides a smoky, savory taste, while the rice paper creates a crunchy texture that mimics bacon surprisingly well. This recipe is perfect for adding to sandwiches, salads, or enjoying as a snack.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup tamari sauce
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon neutral oil (such as grapeseed or avocado)
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 8 pieces rice paper

Steps to Make It

  1. Prepare the Ingredients

    • Gather all the ingredients.
    • Preheat the oven to 400°F.
    • Whisk together the tamari, olive oil, neutral oil, smoked paprika, liquid smoke, and onion powder in a small mixing bowl; set aside.
  2. Prepare the Rice Paper

    • Fill a 9-x 9-inch baking dish with 1 inch of water.
    • Take 2 pieces of rice paper and dip each in the water very briefly.
    • Place the wet rice papers directly on top of one another and press to adhere.
  3. Marinate the Rice Paper

    • Using a pastry brush, brush the marinade over the rice paper until it is thoroughly coated.
    • Using a pizza cutter, scissors, or a very sharp knife, slice the rice paper into 5 strips. Each strip should be about 1.5 inches wide, resembling the width of a piece of uncooked bacon.
    • Transfer the strips to a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet.
    • Repeat this process with the remaining sheets of rice paper.
  4. Bake the Rice Paper Bacon

    • Bake the rice paper bacon for 8 minutes, checking at 5 minutes to ensure they aren't browning too quickly.
    • Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.

Recipe Tips

  • Storage: Once cooked, the rice paper bacon will keep for 1 to 2 days in a tightly sealed container at room temperature, or 1 to 2 weeks if stored in the refrigerator.
  • Rice Paper Shape: If available, use square rice paper to avoid trimming edges.
  • Liquid Smoke: Do not omit liquid smoke as it is essential for the smoky flavor.
  • Double Layer: Use two sheets of rice paper together to prevent burning and ensure ease of handling.
  • Stronger Flavor: For a stronger bacon flavor, brush both sides of the rice paper with marinade. Note that this may reduce the cooking time slightly, so check at 7 minutes.
