Introduction:

Originating from Wisconsin, butter burgers are a delectable treat known for their rich flavor and juicy texture. This recipe combines lean ground beef, generous amounts of butter, and savory toppings to recreate the iconic taste of these Midwestern classics right in your own kitchen.

Ingredients:

  • 10 tablespoons butter, softened
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 pound lean ground beef, preferably sirloin (90/10 or better)
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, or to taste
  • Dash of black pepper, or to taste
  • 4 slices American cheese
  • Lettuce leaves (optional for serving)

Steps to Make It:

  1. Prepare the Buns:

    • Lightly butter the cut sides of the hamburger buns and toast them on a griddle, skillet, or under the broiler. Set the toasted buns aside.
  2. Cook the Onions:

    • In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the chopped onions and cook, stirring frequently, until they are soft and lightly browned, about 15 minutes. Transfer the cooked onions to a bowl and set aside.
  3. Shape and Cook the Burgers:

    • Shape the ground beef into four burger patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each patty.
    • Return the skillet to medium heat. Place the burger patties in the skillet and season them with kosher salt and black pepper. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes on each side, or until the internal temperature reaches at least 160°F (71°C), ensuring they are fully cooked.
  4. Add Cheese and Assemble:

    • Place a slice of American cheese on each burger patty while they finish cooking, allowing the cheese to melt.
    • Meanwhile, reheat the chopped onions briefly on the stovetop or in the microwave until hot.
  5. Assemble the Burgers:

    • Slather each top bun with about 2 tablespoons of softened butter.
    • Optionally, place lettuce leaves on the bottom bun. Top with a cheeseburger patty and a generous spoonful of the cooked chopped onions.
    • Close the burger with the buttered top bun and serve immediately while warm and gooey.

Tips:

  • For thinner patties or smash burgers, press the patties immediately after placing them in the skillet. Avoid pressing down on the burgers during cooking to retain their juices.
